PRIDE AND JOY

As I mentioned in my last e-scribble, today I will focus on my DVD collection. I like to keep things simple, so I will refrain from saying “my DVD and Blu-ray disc collection”. By the way, a question: are blog posts called blog posts? Is each post a blog? If this entire diary is my blog, then is there a specific name for what I write in it? I’m trying to stray away from using the word “post”, hence my little creation “e-scribble”.

My bedoom in my apartment is essentially a lair. A film lair. It’s quite a simple lair, consisting of a bed, wardrobes and a desk, as well as an HD television and a PlayStation 3 console. That is pretty much the hulk of any general bedroom… except when you take a look at the walls and your line of sight is filled with DVD cases, bizarre film titles and memorabilia. Posters ranging from Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction to Sly Stallone’s Rocky, framed film cells (original theatrical film print cuttings), and an ocean of DVDs and Blu-rays. Yes, my humble abode. So humble, it contains films with such taglines as, “Where whores meet saws!” (Sergio Martino’s Torso), and, “Whore aboard!” (Umberto Lava’s Night Train Murders).

I’m a fan of cinema from all over the world. A fan of films that have budgets from $10 to $250,000,000. A fan of straight-to-DVD releases to Hollywood blockbusters. If it’s been captured on film/video, chances are I’ll watch it. Anything to build my cinephile mind from strength-to-strength. But I haven’t quite reached the same level of eccentricity as Mr. Quentin Tarantino. Yet.

As horror is my favourite genre, the majority of my collection is rather understandably a complilation of horror flicks, from monster movies and slashers, to giallo thrillers.

Every time I get a nice round figure of DVDs, say ten or more, I will make a DVD collection update and review the films that I have seen. So, let’s kick things off by listing the films I’ve gotten since July 16th (my birthday), to this past Tuesday, July 28th:

Christine
Insanitarium
Happy Birthday to Me
When Evil Calls
An Interview with the Vampire
13th Child
Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes
Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud
Critters
Earth vs. the Spider
Prey
Loch Ness Terror
A Scanner Darkly
Death Wish
Tortured
Shadow of Fear
Volcano
Lucky Number Slevin
Last Action Hero
The League of Gentleman’s Apocalypse
The Kentucky Fried Movie
Borat

Hopefully I haven’t missed any out.

I haven’t been able to watch 95% of them so far, but last night I watched two of the films back-to-back, for a little three-hour comedy session. I started with Borat, starring Sacha Baron Cohen. This was my second time watching, but the first where I actually paid attention to the screen. It has a lot of laughs and a few especially disgusting moments. I’m surprised it was only given a 15 certificate in the UK. I wonder if there is any stronger material that was cut, and if one day we’ll get to see it in a special edition re-release. I wouldn’t be surprised. Second of all was The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse, the feature-length adaptation of one of my all-time favourite TV shows, The League of Gentlemen (not to be confused with the 1960 heist film of the same name). Plenty of good stuff, but not a patch on the TV show. I’d highly recommend to any fan of dark comedy to purchase all three series of the programme, then maybe cap it off with the movie if you take a liking. The creators have a new show, Psychoville, which is similarly brilliant. The season finale is tonight and I can’t wait!

That’s all for now. I hope to watch a few flicks tonight. Thanks for reading.

Oh, before I go, I must inform you all to (and I’m being held at knifepoint to say this) check out The Purple View.

Oh and oh, if anyone feels like designing me a new banner, feel free. I’d be very grateful, as mine is God awful.

Agan, in honour of Denise Bradley…

Toodle pip!
